Different finish options for your furniture

Finishing wood is what enhances the furniture and gives the furniture its final look depending upon what it’s made of. In case the finish is not done well, the entire get-up of the furniture piece loses its aesthetics. Wood finishes are divided into certain categories depending on the kind of protection it offers to the furniture piece. Wood finishes available in the market have different ways of application:
Some finishes are removed easily just by dissolving them in the solution it was created from. While others are hard and need something external like the air we breathe or chemical agents that can help one get rid of the polish. The latter therefore, tend to last for a much longer time and more durable. Here is a list of different kinds of finishes:

Wax polish
It is often preferred by Indian carpenters because it gives a glossy lustre to the surface and is economical at the same time. Wood wax is a mixture of wax – three options available: carnauba wax, beeswax and paraffin – and a solvent like turpentine oil.
Advantages
· Wood wax renders a glossy shine on the wood surface.
· The coating prevents settling of dust and destruction of the surface.
· Maintenance is easy
Disadvantages
· Will lose its lustre with time.
· If there is a spill, it forms marks as it’s not resistant to solvents.
· Gives the wood a very raw look
· Does not cover the variation & natural flaws in the furniture

French Polish

When a high amount of gloss is required on the surface of any furniture, carpenters usually use French polish. It is a composed of shellac which is mostly dissolved in an absorbent solvent. The exact glossiness comes out after many coats are applied.
Advantages-
· Glossiness is impeccable which can be cleaned with a soft cloth.
· The finish is a lot more even compared to that wax polish
· Economical as compared to other polishes
· Can be re-polished easily
Disadvantages-
· It is also likely to get dull with time. It may require renovation every 5 years or so.

PU Polish
It can be used on both the exteriors as well as interiors of a house. The method of application is usually spraying which gives a lustrous effect. PU Polish comes in three forms- very glossy, matte, and semi-glossy. (please fact check the types of PU Polish, I couldn’t find these at all – “With PU polish various shades can be achieved on wooden surface. Not only that each shade in PU polish has Matt effect and glossy finish too”)
Advantages-
· Other polish loses its shine quickly so if you need a maintenance free product then PU polish is best suited for you.
· PU Polish has a glossy finish that is unmatched.
Disadvantages-
· PU Polish can be very expensive.
· It can crack easily and needs a lot of care.
· Amongst all the polish, PU is the most expensive polish.
While deciding which polish to use, there are a combination of factors to be kept in mind like the look needed, budget, rest of the decor, & how each polish gives what kind of look and feel you want in your home. While the hard polish options last longer, factors like maintenance, whether – internal and external also need to be considered.
